Family Law

Family law governs the relationship between spouses, parents and their children as well as common law spouses, same-sex spouses and even multi-parent families.

Our lawyers have experience in helping clients resolve all separation and divorce matters in both married and common law relationships. These matters can include not only custody, access and support with respect to children, but the division of property and spousal support.

There are three different courts that deal with family law in the province of Ontario; here in Hamilton, most matters are dealt with at the Family Court of the Superior Court of Justice. These matters often include divorce, custody, access, division of property, adoption and child protection.

“Decisions surrounding family matters can be difficult when emotions run high. Our lawyers recognize that and assist you to make an informed decision based on the facts of your situation.”

If you are looking to establish a cohabitation or prenuptial agreement before taking the next step in a relationship, or you are at the end of a relationship, we have the experience to help you move through the process in a smooth results-oriented fashion.

If you have reached an agreement that requires a consultation, we can provide independent legal advice. If your situation is more complex, we can provide advice, negotiate and advocate on your behalf.

When it is appropriate, our first approach is to attempt to resolve difficult family issues using alternative resolution methods aimed at reaching out-of-court settlements. This is not always possible, and in these cases, we have the experience to represent your interests in court.
